International Cleaners Day: that’s a thing?

International Cleaners Day

It’s fair to presume that most, if not all of us, are suffering from some degree of ‘international-something-day’ fatigue. It seems that every day, week and indeed month, is claimed by one cause or another, so it’s hardly a surprise that we struggle to pay much attention to any such occasions unless we have a direct, personal connection to them. Unfortunately that is where International Cleaners Day struggles; though it really shouldn’t.

Cleaners are the unsung heroes of almost every workplace. Their efforts, though largely unnoticed, regularly allow you to get on with your own job unhindered. Yet much like the Bootmaker’s Elves, they appear in the dead of night, do their work and then disappear without credit or acknowledgement.

The work your cleaner does isn’t just making your workplace nicer to look at either – the tasks they complete out-of-hours play a critical role in reducing bacteria and pathogen levels and maintaining the standard of hygiene in the place where you spend 38+ hours each week. If you follow this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion, this means that your cleaner is responsible for playing quite a significant role in helping to maintain your health – which surely is something deserving of your gratitude.

Cleaners come from all walks of life. Some are young, some are old. Some work part-time while they study, others put in long hours in the evenings to allow them to act as caregivers during the day. Many have lived in Australia their whole lives, others have arrived more recently looking for a new start. All of them work hard and deserve a hearty ‘well-done’ for their efforts.

Wednesday, 15 June 2016 is International Cleaners Day.

Please take a moment to consider the efforts of the cleaners in your life (whether you see them or not) as well as those of others both here in Australia and around the world.

Cleaners deserve:

  • To be paid fairly;
  • To have access to proper, functioning equipment which is fit for purpose;
  • To be free from exposure to dangerous substances;
  • To receive adequate management support and health and safety training; and
  • To be appreciated for their hard work.

We salute you cleaners of the world – keep fighting that good fight!
